UN BASHFUL

This painting was inspired by the award-winning, National Geographic photograph often referred to as “Afghan Girl” which depicts an Afghan refugee with very striking, green/blue eyes (swipe to see the picture).

In my painting, I wanted to put even more emphasis on the intensity of the eyes of this woman who has been the subject of a hostile environment - for that reason I decided to cover the majority of her face with the cloth, which is also symbolic of the oppression women face in countries like Afghanistan.
